In the Know… Uber+Lyft Drivers

We take a lot of Ubers and Lyfts, and enjoy getting to know our drivers, but we’re always stunned when we meet a driver who doesn’t have the proper rideshare coverage.

With the popularity of rideshare options in every city across the US, it may be surprising to know that not every auto insurance carrier assumes this special type of risk. And, as a driver, you may risk voiding your current auto insurance without this special coverage. That’s no good.

As a ride-share driver, there are three usage periods in your day:

  1. Off the Clock: personal time in your vehicle, getting groceries, driving to school, heading to the movies. For this period, you are covered by your standard auto policy. That’s great!
  2. On the Clock without Passenger: As you wait for a ride to be assigned, or you are en-route to pick up a rider, you ARE NOT covered by a standard auto policy without a special rideshare endorsement. Yikes!
  3. On the Clock with Passenger: During this period your passenger likely has coverage from your employer Uber/Lyft for injury, but your vehicle may not be covered for damage should you get in an accident. Not good.

So, a standard auto policy doesn’t cover you for all three periods — and if your vehicle is a source of income you’ll want to be protected 24/7.

The Insurance Crew has many rideshare drivers as clients and we’re happy to help drivers get this simple auto insurance endorsement. It doesn’t have to be a lot of money, especially if you have a good driving record. Regardless, reach out to us and get protected.

Have a good drive!
